It’s nearly 90 degrees in Pattaya today, which makes Christmas feel really far away. However, it is mid-November, which means a lot of you are likely gearing up for the Christmas season — decorating your homes, making gift lists and going shopping for those special somebodies. (I know I’m about to pull out my Celine Dion Christmas CD any day now.) And as you start thinking what you’re going to put under that beautifully decorated Christmas tree, I want to share about a way that you can make Christmas even more meaningful this year.
Organizations like World Vision, International Justice Mission and World Concern have gift guides that let you purchase practical gifts for people around the world who are living in poverty — gifts like clothing, farm animals, clean water and money towards a child’s education. One Christmas, instead of buying my dad a regular gift (he’s so hard to shop for!), I looked through one of these catalogs, and when he opened his “gift” from me on Christmas, it was a card telling him that instead of him receiving a traditional present, a family in a third world country had a received a two chickens – a gift that would provide their family with food and a means to make some income.
Programs like these are great way to make your Christmas even more meaningful. They give you a tangible way to remember the poor during this season of giving, and they also provide a great opportunity to teach your family about global issues. With that in mind, I want to invite you to be a part of how the Lord’s moving in Thailand and at Pattaya Slum Ministries. If you’re interested in making your holiday gift dollars go a bit further this year, there are several ways you can provide a gift for PSM – a gift that will make a direct and meaningful impact on the poor we work with in the slums:
- $20 – Monthly supply of adult diapers for four disabled/elderly individuals
- $30 – Milk cartons and/or
- $40 – Fried chicken for 120 slum kids (a week’s supply for slum outreach)
- $40 – Roofing for one slum shack
- $50 – Bicycle to give away as a raffle gift for the youth at our annual Christmas party
- $800 – LED Projector
You can also look at the Suaygnaam Jewelry shop on Etsy if you’re interested in purchasing jewelry pieces made by PSM’s artisans. These would make great Christmas gifts as well, and the proceeds go directly to our artisans and our general ministry expenses.
Wishing you all the most blessed holiday preparations from me and my happy little friends here in Thailand. :)
